Testimonies from “The Attic Studio” participants

The Attic Studio is a magnificent concept, and it is brilliantly run by Graham and Rachel, in a manner that maximises the involvement of as many parties as possible. In years of working with directors, actors and other writers in Edinburgh, London, Amsterdam, Chicago and San Francisco, I've never encountered anything like it.

From a writer's point of view it represents a safe and critical forum where one can develop stage and screen work. The performance and critical feedback of my own new work at the Attic has enabled me to enhance a forthcoming stage play, and to complete a shooting script for what is to be a major feature film. Both these are scheduled for production in the New Year. This timescale simply wouldn't have been achievable without the support from the Attic. I think it's the primary resource for people working in the dramatic arts in Dublin.

The attic is THE only actors workshop in Dublin. It's open door policy means that it is the only place experienced talent can rub shoulders with first-timers and both can learn from the experience. From humble beginnings, Graham and Rachel have worked tirelessly to build an incredible network of committed actors who are hugely knowledgeable in their craft and relentless in their pursuit of further excellence.

As a resource for not only actors, but writers, directors and casting directors, it has no equal - nothing even close. Plus the extensive web resource surrounding the community, offering CVs, headshots, news, chat rooms, discussion groups, downloads and white papers is a carefully crafted and maintained resource unequalled in this area.

But above all, the spirit of possibility, exploration and hard-nosed creative practicality, mixed with across-the-board acceptance and good humour that Rachel and Graham have fostered in this enterprise has made a positive impact on many artists' lives and careers, and made it a force to be reckoned with in the Irish arts and media landscape.

I’ve had the pleasure of partaking in Graham Cantwell and Rachel Rath’s workshops known as The Attic Studio and I can vouch that it stands alone as a place for truly committed artists who are hungry to learn and yearn to apply that knowledge in a supportive but intensely insightful environment. Rachel and Graham’s combined commitment to excellence in art, and access for all, is unparalleled, and anybody who has had the good fortune to be part of their consistently courageous and extraordinary workshops quickly realise that they are forever in debt to The Attic Studio.

I’m a professional writer with seven screenplay commissions, over eighty soap episodes; the winner of Tiernan McBride International Screenplay Award and The Hartley Merrill International Screenwriting Award and I’ve also been commissioned by Daryl Hannah to write a screenplay and acted in several movies so I’m not some naïve novice when I say that, given the necessary support, I believe that under the leadership of Graham Cantwell and Rachel Rath The Attic Studio will not only further enhance the burgeoning international reputation of Irish writers, actors and directors but will also become commonly recognised as the thing that those of us who have had the fortune of participation in it already know it to be – a national treasure.

The Attic is a really great resource for writers and directors to participate in. With talks and workshops on various area's in acting and filmmaking there is always something new and interesting to learn every week. With a pool of talented actors, it's somewhere as a director you can bring scenes from a project, find actors to work with and get immediate feed back on what's working and also how to improve it. Graham and Rachel create an atmosphere that is fun and creative, where people are able to express their talents without fear of failure. The number of people who return every week is a testament to this.

I have worked with The Attic as a source for workshopping ideas and casting from the vast pool of wonderful talent. I have never met such resourceful and committed actors, who constantly strive for the holy grail of their profession... the perfect performance.

The Attic is both an inspired idea and a practical one. It's a grass-roots, ambitious, and self-generating WORK environment that keeps actors and writers and directors and designers in constant dialogue, fostering and re-shaping their approach to their craft and their business, and generally helping to keep alive the impulse to make living, immediate work. Which can only help Dublin's art scene grow along with the rest of the city.

It was through the Attic Studio that I got my first opportunity to work as a Film Editor.  Having worked for many years as a full time Assistant Film Editor on Features, it was the Attic Studio which finally gave me the break to make the jump to full time Editing.  This is a unique space which judges people not on their connections or their CV but on their talent and commitment.  Although primarily an arena for actors, like all good things it has the flexibility to encompass all aspects of film and theatre and to allow us all to interact and learn from each other.  One year on, since my first visit to the Studio, I've edited 2 Lasair's, 1 Oscailt and 1 Arts Council funded Documentary.   The Attic Studio has played a fundamental role in helping me achieve this.

I moved from the Galway Theatre Scene to Dublin over a year ago with tonnes of contacts but not the slightest idea how to get started. As soon as I walked in the door of the Attic Studio I felt supported. Simply mixing and working with fellow actors, writers and directors in a stress free but structured environment was such a luxury.  I have found actors and stage managers for my own company's productions through the Attic and I recently found a great directing job for my freelance work through the Attic Studio website. What Graham and Rachel have done here is created what all theatre and film people only dream about - a free (and by God is that important when you're struggling) job centre, training ground, forum and family for this sector of the Arts Community. I feel very privileged to be a member.

As a founding member of The Attic Studio I can honestly say it has gone from strength to strength. Over the last two and a half years, and more, The Attic has provided grounded structure to the Performing Arts, and has given so much time to otherwise un-nurtured talent. The amount of people who have benefited from Rachel's and Grahams generosity and wisdom, whether they be Writers, Producers, Directors and Actors, is justifiable in itself.

The Attic allows actors, writers and directors to continue their development in ways that are normally just not possible between jobs and engagements, and traditionally have not been possible.   As such it is of immeasurable benefit not just to those practitioners personally, but to the entire quality of screen and stage in Ireland, as it deepens and widens the pool of talent, skills and experience available.

In addition through the Irish Actors Collective, it makes that pool of talent both more visible and accessible. That this important work of skills development is carried out in a way that is also supportive and non-profit, means it is available to all.  This alone, crucially, means the Attic does and will unearth and develop the people that are going to take the craft of writing, directing and acting for Irish stage and screen into the next 15 and 30 years.

Precisely because of its unique qualities the Attic has no obvious balance sheet "bottom-line".  Its influence is as hard to quantify as it is positive and profound.  The Attic is one of those ideas that should have happened years ago, we all owe Graham and Rachel a huge debt. Crucial and irreplaceable.

The Attic is revolutionising the acting community in Dublin. This is the first time that actors, writers and directors are all able to get together, workshop together, practise, get contacts etc. Here you get the feel of an ACTING COMMUNITY - and all of that for free!!!! It's the only place I know of, where writers get the chance to try out their new material as a work-in-progress in front of an audience with immediate feedback, actors are given the chance to workshop and develop their craft while meeting (and working with) directors and writers, and directors have the opportunity to meet and work with an abundance of enthusiastic actors, try out different approaches and are given the chance to work on new writing.

The "Forum" on the Attic web-site provides an additional source of exchange of information and is a vivid place for feedback, critique and praise alike. Everything you ever wanted to see discussed or tackled about acting/writing or directing is being discussed there.

While auditions were hard to find before, often kept as a secret or just not advertised enough, suddenly all the information is shared for the use of all! The Attic also provides an Online-Casting-site, also for free; where else would anyone find such a service??!!!

The Attic also encourages its members to support plays that are already in production, ensuring that a much wider audience knows about them and that they get much better houses.

For the first time I don't feel like an actor struggling all alone anymore but as a part of a great community of artists with possibilities. I met wonderfully gifted people through the Attic whom I possibly would never have met otherwise, and I am very grateful to Rachel and Graham for all their hard work.

What Equity never achieved, The Attic has done now! I always envied British Equity and our American peers for the wealth of information at their disposal, but it seems that the tide is finally turning for us too!

And it is about time that Rachel and Graham receive some financial help from the Arts Council for all their hard and selfless work.

I heard of The Attic by word of mouth through auditioning actors and actresses and then, somehow, my script fell into Rachel Rath’s hands. She sent me a very cordial e-mail inviting me to The Attic some evening. I’d heard a lot about the project and was very intrigued, not just by the good reports, but also by the professional and aggressive way in which Rachel and Graham were getting bodies in, sniffing out anyone who might have an interest and then politely making them aware of their endeavour. I made my way along one Tuesday evening (they were on Tuesdays then) and was delighted by what I found. Arriving late, I found myself in a workshop on Showreels being given by an editor, advising those actors present on how to compose their showreel and where to go, and letting directors and producers know what to look for. Then Graham stood up, the room fell silent and he introduced a few scenes directed by one of the Attic members. After the wonderful performances (I think the scenes were from “Ghosts” by Ibsen) the floor was opened up to discussion and the whole group talked about what they did and didn’t like, the actors and director then answering the questions and defending or conceding their points.

I am full of admiration for anyone who puts their efforts into such an ambitious and original idea, and that this little collective that started in a rickety old attic (but of course has now grown to a terrific size) has been so successful, speaks wonders for Graham’s and Rachel’s obvious ambition and intelligence.

I have being part of the Attic Studio since 2003. It’s a wonderful fill each time I go into the Attic studio. There are not enough words to describe how much I have gain from going in every week. There are something to learn each time I go in. Which makes it a unique place to be every week. It's a place where your cultural background does not matter. What matters is how serious you are.

I think 'the attic' is a great place for young actors to learn their trade and practise their craft.  With Rachel and Graham’s guidance it can only make them stronger.  Actors in Ireland need a place like this if we want to keep producing fine actors and directors etc.

I find the Attic Studio to be an excellent resource as an actor and director. Working in the arts can be a difficult and isolating road, and the Attic works as a community where we can exchange ideas and information. It is a space where we can try out writing, directing and performing to develop our skills. We also share information on jobs, funding opportunities, contacts, and so on. I have a degree in Drama and Theatre Studies, and I still felt very unsure where to turn to for practical information and support when I left college. I now have an idea about how the theatre and film industry works in Ireland, and I have a place to meet others working in the same field for artistic exchange and general support to continue working in the area.

The attic is a wonderful platform for actors of all ages big and small. In terms of training it is like been in an acting college but without the pressure to perform. The workshops are amazing, and instead of paying a couple of hundred euro for these workshops, they come to you free of charge and are even better then, some of the workshops going around. They give you an in depth analysis in how you are performing in terms of, you prepare monologues, and they would give you a very good critical analysis, of were you went wrong and how you can correct your mistakes. If it wasn’t for the attic studio, i would be able to do half of what i am doing now, and its a blessing in disguise that its here and with the support of the rest of the members, it will be here for a long time. From the bottom of my heart i thank graham and rachel and all the other members for what they have done, in helping other actors develop their talent.

With regard to The Attic Studio, I would like to comment that the organisers of this group have done and continue to do outstanding work in assisting actors, writers, directors and producers to achieve far more than they could on their own. The atmosphere at the weekly meetings is electric and people are welcomed when they arrive. There is a continuous news service for all the creative people who use the Attic and for myself, I have found that Graham Cantwell and Rachel Rath have incredible capacity to encourage and motivate the huge number of people who attend each Wednesday and the use of The Attic's online database I personally have found to be of great value. With the help of The Attic Studio I have found the recognition I was looking for and encouragement to go on writing.

I’d just like to say that the attic studio is the best thing that's ever happened in Dublin. The generosity and openness of Graham and Rachel has to be seen to be believed. They are an inspiration and even though I haven't been going it has changed my life. I am now a clown doctor which I heard about through the attic website. I have also got other jobs through the attic like recently I was in an RTE Promo for the Den because someone saw my headshot on the hotcollective. It is a service which was badly needed and it took a lot of insight to see that it was needed. It is really innovative and entrepreneurial and an inspirational and creative place to be.

The Attic is an incredibly important place for aspiring actors and writers to develop their skills and gain the confidence needed to express themselves and their talent. The attic was the first place i ever performed a monologue for camera and ever attended truly beneficial workshops. I also met some incredibly influential people and lifelong friends in the industry who i would never have encountered otherwise. It's become an integral part of the Irish acting community and needs the support to be able to grow in the direction it has the potential to under the guidance of Graham and Rachel who are unsurpassed in terms of their commitment, desire and sheer energy that they lend, especially to new actors/writers looking to dabble their toes for the first time.

I have been going to the attic workshop for 13 months now and I have found it is the ideal location for actors and writers to show what they have and improve on it. As a writer and an actor I feel that my work is getting better from the excellent advice given to me by other writers and actors.

Before discovering the Attic Workshop in September of last year I was feeling isolated, and indeed rather lonely, as an actress in Dublin. Having attended many classes and courses (all of which had cost me a fortune!) I had developed a network of friends working - or desiring to work in theatre and film. However meeting these people and 'talking' about our craft (and lack of opportunity to practice it) is not enough for any actor. What the attic workshop offers is ACTION. As well as being a venue to meet and exchange ideas with fellow 'thespians' it also offers the opportunity to rehearse and showcase the work and ideas of upcoming writers and directors. All of this happens in a supportive environment central to which is audience feedback and discussion. I feel that the Attic has enhanced my life is several ways and is an absolutely invaluable contribution to the creative force in Dublin today.

The Attic is a one-of-a-kind place where actors, writers and directors can all get together and create more work in the business, Irish Acting needs a place like The Attic. Since joining The Attic, I have gotten more contacts and information on upcoming productions than ever before, and would be happy to recommend any professional actors, writers or directors to attend whenever possible.

The Attic Studio is great support for all actors, writers, directors, producers and all involved in the Arts. There is no age group so therefore the Artist is not only learning and performing each time they go, they are also surrounded by wise and innocent people were they can learn from both, people with a great deal of experience and people who receive it. It has already produced two successful shows and for sure it will produce more. It is a big part of the Industry in Dublin and is spreading outside of the city at a random rate. And it's all thanks to Rachel and Graham.

The Attic has provided a dynamic, supportive and innovative space for actors, writers, directors and producers to come together to hone their talents and collaborate so as to create and develop a whole new market of talent in Ireland. Certainly actor friends in the UK and the US who have confirmed that there is nothing comparable in those countries.

Rachel and Graham  have created an exciting environment where members are free to experiment and be challenged personally and professionally on the quality of their work. Their integrity is inspirational. The Attic not only provides important practical support ranging from dealing with agents, promoting yourself in the entertainment business, C.V.s, headshots, auditions etc but it inspires members to be the best they can. The quality of writing and acting which I've seen among my peers shows that the Attic is a hotbed of talent which deserves to be cultivated and financially supported. It provides an accessible opportunity for networking within the Arts both nationally and internationally. I've no doubt that its members will provide an immense contribution to the Arts world at a national and international level.

The Attic Studio is a highly progressive, dynamic, structured, and focused co-operative that would flourish and evolve given a level of funding.  Both Graham Cantwell and Rachel Rath are 100% committed and dedicated professionals.

The Attic provides both Actors and Writers with a valuable source of support, information, motivation and provides a general sense of artistic, creative community, where ideas and projects are nurtured and developed.  It is an essential resource to an Actor.

I joined the Attic in April of this year. I have being in other drama groups before, but none like this one.  It is a great place for all types of artists to meet and bounce ideas of one another.  This year to date I have produced a short film called "Movers & shakers", and am currently in pre-production on another two shorts.  Since then "Movers & shakers" has made into 4 major short film festivals both here in Ireland and abroad. The point being, this little venture of ours and the ones to follow would not have possible had it not being for the Attic and the people I meet there. It is a great resource, fun place, and a privilege and a pleasure to be a member of.
Noel Brady

The Attic is an excellent and essential idea.  One may think at first that it's just that; an idea.  However, it's not.  It works really- and surprisingly- very well.

This is mainly due to the efforts of the two main people involved, Rachel Rath & Graham Cantwell.  Their positive attitude and hard work- (for others)- is an attitude that has filtered it's way through the Attic members.  Everyone helps each other out and instead of slating each other which you might expect to find from a group of competing actors, they encourage one another.  This is a mighty feat.

Going to The Attic Studio has greatly improved by productivity and helped me to hone my craft as a playwright. The encouragement, collaboration and feedback that I get from attending the attic is invaluable to me.

I've met many talented writers and actors that have contributed greatly to my recent work and made some very good friends in the process. Performing work-in-progress scenes in the studio gives me regular deadlines to meet and also provides the much needed boost of hearing the writing with a responsive audience. Without the opportunities that the Studio provides the process of writing my current play would have been much slower and less focused.

The Attic is many things for many people; part workshop, work out, showcase, social club, classroom and group therapy session! There is nothing else like it in Dublin and the arts scene here is fair richer and accessible because of it.

I have been attending the attic studio for one year now. I was first introduced to the organisation, by an amazingly warm, super energetic presence of Rachel Rath.

I had just moved back to Dublin after having studied film for a year in Tralee Co. Kerry, on my arrival back to Dublin I expected to move into the Dublin scene with relative ease, the harsh reality of the fact was the I was left out in the cold. Nobody knew who I was and nobody wanted to know. On my meeting with Rachel I was invited a meeting of "The attic studio" which I attended and was finally introduced the community that I had been searching for months.

Form being a member of the Attic Studio, my contacts, work load and reputation has been building slowly but positively in the Irish film industry. The Attic studio has provided me with the confidence and the know how to survive in the Irish film industry and in my opinion is a key element of what Irish arts are about, supporting Irish artists. The Attic is invaluable to any young talent looking for support in what seems like an unsupported industry.
Simon Conneally

As a film director, under normal circumstances, I am rarely in a position to workshop creatively with actors whom I have not hired for a job. Being in charge of a film set often creates a certain professional distance between a director and their cast, as well. How wonderful to drop into the Attic Studio on a Wednesday evening and actually make contact with a group of actors who are there voluntarily to do good work for the sake of honing their craft, and better still is that they can all avail of this resource for free. The Attic Studio's website, which hosts the Irish Actor's Network, is always my first stop when I have a film or TV advert to cast. I have never encountered such a wholly supportive base for actors, directors and writers in both the film and theatre industries in the United States or anywhere else in Ireland. Rachel Rath and Graham Cantwell's work and dedication to individual professional success in the industry is worth its weight in gold.

Having been up and down Dublin for nearly a month, struggling to find sufficient number of theatre actors as the participants for my final-year psychology degree project/thesis, there I was in a wet and windy January afternoon, anxiously standing outside of the Irish Writer’s Centre, with my next hope resting in my palm – a piece of dirty paper with the name of the Attic on it, together with a contact name Graham and a mobile phone number. I rang the number. Graham answered the phone. I went to the Attic. Problem solved.

Having finished all my exams, being notified that my thesis titled “Expert memory and automatic processing: An experimental study in theatre actors’ script reading” had just been awarded a mark of “B+” – given that no “A”s were awarded in my class and that only five people achieved “B+”s, there I was in a shining and warm June afternoon, confidently delivering the presentation on my thesis to members of the Attic.

I said thanks, to Graham. He said you are always welcome, Hai. I said thanks very much indeed to you all – those participated in my study, and those who also gave generous support. They said you are always welcome, Hai. I said thank you for your existence and companionship, to the Attic Studio. It said you are always, and always welcome, Hai. We then all happily live together ever after. We are families.

Though I live outside Dublin and I have not been able to attend many “attic nights”, I have found the contact with attic studio a great resource in networking and obtaining employment.  Most networking in this industry can take place in pubs and social events.  For many professionals with children and second jobs this can be not only an impractical way of meeting fellow professionals but also, in my opinion not a very healthy way for the industry to develop.

Many actors, writers and directors can spend years trying to develop projects and work on their own with no recognition or even knowledge of their peers which can be detrimental to their long term prospects.  In short, many artists who want to pursue their craft full time, who believe they have something to contribute, have a real and tangible shot at having their ideas realised in a supportive and safe environment.  In the long term, the histories of the artists who have committed to attic are known which leads to a knowledge within the industry of the artists work, and a development in their professional life both fiscally and artistically.

It’s easy to get cynical in this business.  That’s just not good for art!  I cannot think of an organisation, more deserving than The Attic Studio for Arts Council Funding.

The Attic Studio is a great place to meet likeminded people. The workshops are always different and interesting. Writers, actors, directors and audience members can get invaluable feedback from the performances that occur at the Attic Studio. It is a fun environment filled with people who have a great enthusiasm for their craft and a great desire amongst people to learn and to improve at what they do. It's a great opportunity for people to come together and collaborate on different projects as well.

It's an amazing place. No where would actors and writers and directors get support like it for no monetary remuneration. It's a boost to know that as an actor an organisation like this exists in the dog eat dog, get all you can society of 2005. Graham and Rachel are truly an inspiration.

I think the attic is a great workshop and will make history as a point of meeting for the actors, directors and scriptwriters of Ireland and abroad. It is a open-minded place where everybody is welcome and helped in an altruistic manner. The Attic is a valuable and unique enterprise, allowing developing writers and actors to hone their craft, learn new ideas and experiment with new material in a friendly supportive atmosphere. I am a 33 year old actor who, after dabbling in the industry for a number of years, decided in November 2003 to devote myself full-time to acting. I was lucky to have obtained a contract straight away but was still worried about the future and how I would be able to sustain my initial enthusiasm. I was fortunate to have been introduced to the attic by a friend and I have not looked back since. The attic has allowed me to not only sustain my enthusiasm but also to continually reaffirm my decision to pursue this career. I have been cast for a few different projects through the attic to date and have also had the opportunity of extending my contact list quite extensively. During my discussions with fellow peers in the industry I have heard nothing but excellent reports from all levels of the industry regarding the professionalism that exists within the attic. This professionalism has proven to be extended to me again and again during my time with the studio.

Every generation needs an outlet to nuture talent and in today's disjointed society, the Attic Studio is a cocoon for emerging artists and new voices in the Arts in Ireland. I feel it is an essential part of how I operate as an actor, keeping me in contact with all that is going on in the industry. The industry like most other businesses like to use tried and tested resources they don't like taking risks... however when the attic becomes more established and people in the industry recognise it as a reliable and respected  'organisation' it will be taken very seriously and will hopefully be recognised as serious resource in the industry. I think the attic will become a permanent feature in people’s criteria for training history and an indication of the initiative and commitment of a potential actor.

It’s great. I’ve been in Dublin 5 months- for the first 2 months I was lost- I didn’t know what to do- where to go and how to get started up here- I knew no 1. Since I found out bout the attic- I’ve met all the friends I now have in Dublin- other actors, directors, writers–now I actually know where to go and hear about what’s going on. Also it allows you to act- we get to act every week-its like ‘fight club’ for actors I think Cillian or some one said- it’s true- ‘and if this is your first time- you have to act’ – brilliant, that’s all actors want to do; to be allowed to act- acting is all about confidence- the last real part I had in something was in February in the north. That’s 6 months ago- 6 months without ‘playing’ – and you’re confidence can get very low especially with the consistent rejection that comes with this business. The workshops and scenes keep ye fresh- challenged and pushing- Also to have a writer come up and ask you to do a piece for them in the attic is amazing- both for your confidence and learning as a performer- the standard of some of the writing up there is excellent. I’ve been fortunate enough to work on some of these with some excellent actors and director- and have learnt so much from this work. I’m a far better actor than I was 6 months ago because of the attic. I honestly have to say I’d probably have given up on Dublin and would be in London or somewhere doing the same thing as I did in Dublin for the first 2 months (getting lost) if it wasn’t for the attic and what you guys have given me. So cheers!

I think/hope it will become more nationally and internationally recognised and surpass so called institutions that rip people off.

I think it is one of the most important think tanks in the city, that keeps the sometimes very marginalised people of the arts strong and motivated with a sense of community and belonging to their craft, without having to be measured on what work you have done but rather on the work you are capable of doing or will perhaps do in the future.

The attic is a really good resource of talent.  I think in time many good projects/productions will take place under the Attic Studio name!

The attic is something that should be strongly supported as it as an untapped goldmine for young upcoming and talented people in the creative industry. It has gained recognition with little or no funding based on a solid foundation of hard working members who are just looking for an opportunity to show how talented they are. With proper funding more training can be given to fine tune their talents and a pool of very talented actors/directors/writers will be available to agents in the entertainment field.

The Attic is exactly what Dublin was missing: an exciting underground movement for actors, writers and directors full of creative energy and eager to put something good out there. I find it very inspiring.

Professionally run, well organised group of highly motivated and altruistic creative individuals, who have formed a base and foundation for many creative individuals to operate from.

I like the energy of the attic. It was made for me. It is very important to have a place to meet up for actors especially, and to share ideas and news. It’s a great place for contacts generally. The informality of it helps creativity.

The Attic is really fantastic and I’m really happy to be involved I think its really important that people work together particularly writers, actors and directors who lets face it cant exist with out the other and push each other and support each other not only creatively but also on a personal level in a business that it has to be said is as best tough and at worst a very lonely place indeed... sorry I have gone on a bit! So in a nutshell it’s great!

The Attic is all about people creating opportunities and experimenting with new writing and ideas. There is a pooling of resources and a collaborative spirit which is refreshing in what can sometimes be quite a self-centered profession. Thanks!

The Attic Studio is great because there is a real spirit of co-operation and support from not only the organisers but also all the members. Everyone is attentive when people are doing scenes, no-one puts anyone down and everyone seems to be striving toward a common goal. I think the good atmosphere is partly due to the fact that fees aren’t paid. When money isn’t involved, everyone is there because they want to be and advice is given because of a desire to help.

It is a very useful place in terms of meeting like minded people, getting practice, networking and is a fun place to be.

I think it’s been invaluable to me in setting me on the path to being an actor and giving myself the impetus to say "This is my job". It’s inspired me, watching great talent act around me and talk around me and it’s been a great learning experience by being in that environment. Without the Attic, I think I would have found it so difficult and intimidating making that decision to be an actor and take the plunge and believe I could do it just by wanting it badly enough and committing to it. I love what you've put together. It's helped me a lot, so thanks!

Under current arrangements it seems like it should qualify for charitable status!!  It has wonderfully humanitarian and artistic values and is striving to benefit and develop the Irish acting business as a whole.

As a young actor looking to break into the industry it can be very lonely, professionally and personally. Sometimes it’s difficult to find out where the workshops, auditions, photographers, sound recordists, improv groups, show reel editors etc. are to get you started  and the attic studio offers that and tells you which ones are the best/cheapest to go to. It gives you the chance to work on your own craft by performing for the group and getting feedback from members of the group and workshop exercises to improve your body, mind and ability. It is amazing what Rachel, Graham and the gang have achieved on non-existent resources, it would be amazing what they could achieve with even with minimal funding.

I think the attic is a brilliant idea and a very generous, open-handed organisation which provides fantastic services. The one I benefit most from is the emailed info.

I think The Attic is a unique and valuable resource for the arts and is something that in order for it to grow will need the recognition and funding it deserves.

I think Graham and Rachel have the right attitude / experience to help others who are looking for direction in their careers, and the ability of the Attic to provide an invaluable network and support group for everyone to practice their skills should be encouraged and developed by any able funding bodies.

I think it is brilliant and it was definitely a major factor in me leaving my fulltime job, just knowing that there is support out there. Fantastic and very well run by two very dedicated people, Rachel and Graham!

The attic helps all walks of life. Be it actors, directors or writers. The attic shows a different side to the entertainment industry, an industry so dulled and so carnivorous and tells them that it doesn’t have to be like that. It brings all people together, shy, loud, young, old, black white... it tells us to stop marinating in the selfish bubble we more often than not are victim to. It tells us that we need to share, we need to work together, we're in this together... it gives people confidence it gives them a voice that we are more often than not afraid to use... in order to benefit from it, and from anything in my opinion all one has to do is be themselves... forget the masks many hide behind, or the lines we recite when the camera isn’t rolling... it is an honest, principle driven organisation created by two genuine articles in Graham and Rachel...

I think it’s a great thing that’s going on. I love the way it’s kind of underground and you find out about it through word of mouth. Very good vibe on the night, everyone’s on the same level. Good stuff comes out of it.
